Meghalaya is one of the most beautiful untapped and unexplored paradise states of Northeast India, where the clouds sit on the surface and you feel the clouds kissing your lips. Surrounded by the mountains of Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo, Meghalaya have many rivers most of these are rain fed and seasonal which creates deep gorges and several beautiful waterfalls.
A number of tribes, including the Khasis, the Jaintias, and the Garos, all with their own cultures, traditions, dress, and languages, live in this area.
1. Visit the mesmerizing waterfalls
Meghalaya is the home to a number of beautiful and cascading waterfalls. The Elephant waterfall and the Bishop - Beadon waterfalls at Shillong are one of the most beautiful ones. In addition to the falls in Shillong, you can visit Cherrapunjee to see the Nohkalikai Falls plunging down from 1100 feet above sea level. The Seven Sister Falls, Dainthlein Falls, and Krang Suri are just some of the stunning waterfalls that can be explored from Shillong.
2. Visit the Laitlum Canyons
Perched at great heights, Laitlum Canyons are a delight for the eyes. A lush green environment surrounds you all around, with stretches of green grass and layers of rocky hills on either side of you.
3. Asia’s Cleanest Village
Meghalaya's Mawlynnong village is considered to be Asia's cleanest village and is a picture perfect place even before Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan became a national phenomenon.
4. Visit the sacred groves
The Mawphlang Sacred Forest lies around 25 km from Shillong. The sacred groves are essentially a forest area considered sacred among the Khasis. These groves are generally bordered by a dense growth of Castanopsis Kurzii trees that forms a protective cover that halts the intrusion of Pinus Kasia (Khasi pine) that grows wild in all areas outside the sacred groves. And inside the sacred grove is nature’s own museum with rare and amazing plants, orchids, flowering trees and butterflies.
5. Nongriat: Visit the intriguing Living Root Bridges
Nongriat is the place in which there is a combination of the two prime attractions of Meghalaya. One is the double-decker living root bridge and other is Rainbow fall which is the most beautiful waterfalls but to reach the Nongriat village is not for the weak knees or fainted heart people. The trek starts from the Tryna village where the path to the village is a terraced staircase in the middle of the thick forest, passing through two suspension bridges.
6. Experience a unique river side camping at Shnongpdeng.
Shnongpdeng is situated around 8 km to the North-West of Dawki, Meghalaya. While the same crystal clear Umngot river flows through Dawki, the over commercialization and the hustle-bustle has shifted the appeal to its less popular twin, Shnongpdeng.
An offbeat exotica such as this offers a rare opportunity to experience a totally different sensation, a haven for adventure enthusiasts as well as solace seekers alike.
7. Mesmerising Caves –
Although this beautiful destination offers a variety of attractions, its enormous age-old caves attract a lot of tourists from around the world. Nature enthusiasts love losing themselves in its resplendent beauty and feeling an inner connection with Mother Nature. While you are in Meghalaya don't dare to miss Krem Mawmluh,Krem Lymput & Mawsmai Cave.
